Latex Balloon Sizes & Starter Stock
Choose the right balloon size with confidence
Balloon size changes the scale, silhouette, helium performance and stock required for a design. Use the visual comparisons above together with this guide to plan everyday work, statement installations and a sensible starter range.
Round latex balloons
- 5 inch: mini accents, garland detail and air-filled work. Not normally chosen for helium.
- 9 inch: compact decorations, clusters and smaller-scale detail. Air filling is often the practical choice.
- 11/12 inch: the versatile everyday standard for bouquets, arches, garlands and helium work.
- 16 inch: a strong focal size for larger bouquets and organic decor.
- 24 and 36 inch: statement balloons for high-impact displays, installations and event photography.
Modelling balloons
- 160: slim and precise for fine details and intricate modelling.
- 260: the professional all-rounder and the best core size for most balloon modelling.
- 360: thicker, more substantial and useful for bold elements or larger figures.
- 646: the widest option shown, suited to robust shapes, large-scale work and strong visual weight.
Size labels are nominal
The stated inch size describes the intended inflated diameter. Shape and final appearance vary slightly by brand, colour, inflation pressure and manufacturing batch. Inflate to the maker’s recommended size for the best shape and reliability.
A sensible starter stock
Begin with the sizes used most often, then expand according to the work your customers request. A focused range is easier to rotate, store and replenish than a large collection of slow-moving stock.
Helium reality
Helium lift depends on balloon volume. Small 5 inch balloons are generally unsuitable for practical helium use, while larger balloons provide more lift and normally float longer.
Actual float time varies with balloon quality, inflation size, treatment, temperature, handling and atmospheric conditions. Test before promising a specific duration for an event.
Before choosing a size
- Will the balloon be air-filled or helium-filled?
- How far away will guests view the design?
- Does the installation need fine detail or strong visual scale?
- Will the design be transported through doors or narrow spaces?
- Does the chosen brand specify a different inflation diameter?
Storage checklist
- Keep uninflated balloons cool, dry and away from direct sunlight.
- Protect stock from heat, ozone, dust and sharp objects.
- Store colours and sizes in clearly labelled, closed containers.
- Rotate older stock forward and avoid unnecessary overstocking.
- Check ageing stock before using it for important installations.
- Keep opened bags sealed to reduce exposure and contamination.
